Conversion
Prof. Samuel (Zung Bawi Thawng) was born and raised in a Christian family. As a child, he regularly attended Sunday school. He believed that good deeds could save him and grant him entry into heaven, so he earnestly tried to do good in every area of his life. However, when an evangelist came to his hometown and held a salvation camp, God led Samuel to attend. It was at that camp, in 1984, that he experienced a spiritual rebirth and was born again.

God’s Call
Compelled by God’s love, Samuel felt called to serve the Lord and began working as an evangelist. For two years, he dedicated himself to this ministry. During that time, over two hundred individuals came to salvation through his efforts. Through these experiences, Samuel clearly recognized that God had chosen and called him to serve in His ministry.

Education
After completing his matriculation (tenth standard), he sensed God’s calling to serve as an evangelist. He served in that capacity for two years. Desiring to serve God more effectively, he was granted the opportunity—through God’s grace—to study the Word of God in Bible schools for a total of seven years.

Ministry
During his time in Bible colleges and seminaries, Samuel frequently engaged in open-air preaching, youth training, salvation camps, and evangelistic crusades during summer holidays. Through these ministries, God brought people to salvation. Beginning in his third year of B.Th. studies, he also began training ministers of the Gospel Baptist Churches of Myanmar.

After completing his M.Th. degree, Samuel served as a pastor at his home church, Gospel Baptist Church in Falam Township, Chin State, Myanmar, for two years. During his time as a pastor, he continued to organize crusades and salvation camps. As a result, many souls were saved and new members were added to the local church. When he began pastoring in 1994, the church had approximately 250 members. By 1996, God had increased the membership to about 375. Samuel credits God's faithfulness for this growth, acknowledging that though humans are often unworthy, God remains steadfast and faithful.

In 1996, Gospel Baptist Bible Seminary was in urgent need of a lecturer. In response, the seminary board and leaders of the Gospel Baptist Churches appointed Samuel as Dean. In 1999, he was appointed Vice Principal, and in 2002, he became the Principal of the Seminary, a role he held until 2010. Samuel was privileged to be one of the founding members. BIMS was established by leaders of the Biblical Conservative Baptist Churches of Myanmar with the vision of translating and interpreting the Bible into various ethnic languages. The organization aims to reach the lost and to equip pastors and leaders to serve the needs of local churches in Myanmar. Samuel served as the President of BIMS for four years.
